SCAD Sarangani
Tambuyog responded as well to the need to promote CBCRM in the war-inflicted Mindanao. Thus, in 1997, participatory research begun in two municipalities in Sarangani province. Sarangani lies southwest of Mindanao island. Sarangani and the adjacent General Santos City are well-known for tuna fisheries, being in the strategic location facing Celebes Sea.
SCAD Sarangani was formally opened in early 1998. After two years, partnership expanded from two Peoples Organizations (PO) in two municipalities to three more coastal municipalities, thus effectively encompassing all coastal municipalities in Sarangani Province. Also, there are now 6 direct PO-partners of SCAD Sarangani.
A provincial network of resource managers composed of 24 leaders (members of organizations or independent individuals who are mostly leaders of FARMCs) has been formed from the 6 coastal municipalities, whose function is mainly advocacy and implementation of fisheries and coastal resource management policies.
In addition, the PO-partners of SCAD Sarangani have established various types of income generating activities, namely, consumer store, fishery-based projects, and micro-lending.
Other issues being addressed by the program include water resources management and disaster relief. The formation of Sapu Cove Watershed Management Council is an effort to complement and integrate coastal to upland development interventions in Sapu Cove. Its 4-year integrated micro-watershed management plan is already in its initial stage of implementation.
